GST formulas

  • Add GST: GST = price × rate ÷ 100; total = price + GST.
  • Remove GST: taxable value = inclusive price × 100 ÷ (100 + rate); GST = inclusive price − taxable value.
  • Within a state: CGST = SGST = GST ÷ 2. To another state: IGST = full GST.

Worked examples

  • ₹1,000 + 18% GST (within state) = ₹90 CGST + ₹90 SGST → ₹1,180.
  • ₹1,180 including 18% GST → taxable value ₹1,000, GST ₹180.
  • ₹500 + 5% GST (to another state) = ₹25 IGST → ₹525.

FAQ

How do I add GST to a price?

Multiply the price by the rate and divide by 100, then add it to the price. Example: 18% GST on ₹2,500 is ₹450, so the total is ₹2,950.

How do I remove GST from a price that includes it?

Divide the GST-inclusive price by (100 + rate) and multiply by 100. Example: ₹1,180 including 18% GST has a taxable value of ₹1,000 and GST of ₹180.

What is the difference between CGST, SGST and IGST?

For a sale within one state, GST is split equally into CGST (central) and SGST (state) — UTGST in union territories. For a sale to another state, the full rate is charged as IGST.

Are the 12% and 28% GST slabs still used?

No. From 22 September 2025, most items taxed at 12% moved to 5% and most items at 28% moved to 18%, while luxury and sin goods moved to a 40% rate. Tobacco and pan masala moved to the 40% rate on 1 February 2026.

What are the GST rates in 2026?

The main rates are 0%, 5%, 18% and 40%. Special rates remain for a few items: 3% on gold and silver, 1.5% on cut and polished diamonds and 0.25% on rough diamonds. Check the rate for your exact HSN code before invoicing.
